Surprise Proposal Photos at Freedom Park, Charlotte NC

There are few moments more exciting to photograph than the exact second someone realizes their life is about to change. For Matt and Keren, that moment unfolded beneath the trees and among the beautiful blooms of Freedom Park, tucked between Charlotte’s Dilworth and Myers Park neighborhoods.

Matt reached out to me well before the proposal so we could thoughtfully plan every detail—from the location and setup to the timing and how we would make sure Keren had absolutely no idea what was coming. We wanted the proposal to feel natural and intimate rather than staged, and Freedom Park was the perfect setting.

Planning the Perfect Charlotte Proposal

The time of year played a big role in choosing Freedom Park. We considered the seasonal blooms, the beautiful outdoor spaces, and the way the park would allow us to create photographs that felt genuine and connected to the moment.

For a surprise proposal, timing is everything. Matt and I carefully coordinated where he and Keren would be, where I would be positioned, and how the proposal would unfold so I could photograph the story without giving away the surprise.

And then there was an even bigger surprise waiting for Keren.

A Surprise Within the Surprise

In the weeks leading up to the proposal, Matt coordinated with both his parents and Keren’s parents, who flew in from New York to be part of the celebration. But they didn't come alone—they brought the dog, too.

Matt knew how much it would mean to Keren to have her family and her dog there for such an important moment. It was one of those thoughtful details that made the entire proposal about more than simply asking a question. It became a celebration of the people—and four-legged family members.

Once the proposal happened, the surprise continued as their families joined them to celebrate. It was emotional, joyful, and completely personal to Matt and Keren.

Photographing the Moment

My goal when photographing a proposal is to tell the entire story, not just capture the moment Matt got down on one knee.

There is the anticipation beforehand. The nervous excitement. The proposal itself. Keren’s reaction. The hugs and happy tears afterward. The family coming together. And all of those little in-between moments that become even more meaningful as the years go by.

For this proposal, I photographed with a combination of digital and film to create a collection of images that feels both timeless and authentic. Film brings a beautiful, organic quality to quiet emotional moments, while digital photography allows me to move quickly and confidently as the action unfolds.

The result is a gallery that tells the story as it actually felt—natural, emotional, joyful, and full of surprise.
