Peyton & Hayden’s Proposal at Daniel Stowe Conservancy

There’s something incredibly meaningful about being invited into one of the most intimate moments of a couple’s story — the very beginning of their engagement. Recently, I had the honor of photographing a truly heartfelt marriage proposal by Peyton to Hayden at the Daniel Stowe Conservancy in Belmont, outside Charlotte NC.

This wasn’t a last-minute plan. The groom-to-be and I collaborated for weeks — choosing the perfect location, mapping out the setup, and coordinating timing to ensure the surprise unfolded seamlessly. He wanted the proposal to feel natural and memorable. And it absolutely was.

Why We Chose The Williamson Conservatory

Given the, time of year, seasonal blooms, and the weather forecast, we selected the Williamson Conservatory as the ideal proposal location. As the Carolinas’ only 8,000-square-foot, five-story glass house, the Williamson Conservatory is remarkable. Inside, an indoor waterfall flows beneath a canopy of tropical plants, while orchids bloom year-round. No matter the season outdoors, this greenhouse immerses you in a botanical escape.

Telling the Story in Film

I photographed their session with film to preserve the moment with depth and intention. Not shown in this blog, I also used the latest digital cameras for additional perspective. For film, I chose Kodak Portra 400, the go-to stock for professional portraits because of its soft color palette, beautiful skin tones, and timeless feel.

The film negatives were developed and scanned by The Photo Outfitters in Charlotte. From there, I processed the scans to ensure they faithfully matched the true-to-life colors and tones of the specific day — the warmth of the filtered light, the lush greens of the tropical leaves, the delicate hues of the orchids.

There’s something about film in a glass conservatory — the way it renders highlights and soft color transitions — that feels especially romantic. It adds a layer of nostalgia to a moment that already feels timeless.
