Proposal at Daniel Stowe’s Gardens
Proposing at Daniel Stowe Conservancy, by Charlotte Wedding Photographer Michael Parks
She said YES at Daniel Stowe Conservancy, Belmont NC
There are few moments more exciting to photograph than a marriage proposal—especially when I get to help plan the surprise from the very beginning. Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful proposal at Daniel Stowe Conservancy in Belmont, NC, just outside Charlotte. Justin and I worked together to thoughtfully plan the location, setup, and timing so everything would come together perfectly without Alexis suspecting a thing.
Choosing the Perfect Proposal Location
When you're planning a surprise proposal, location matters. We considered the time of year, the flowers in bloom, and the weather forecast before deciding that The Williamson Conservatory at Daniel Stowe Conservancy would be the perfect place to pop the question.
And what a location it is.
The Williamson Conservatory is the Carolinas’ only 8,000-square-foot, five-story glass house, filled with tropical plants and orchids throughout the year. An indoor waterfall adds another beautiful element to the space, creating a setting that feels both romantic and completely unexpected.
Most importantly, it gave us a beautiful indoor option that wouldn't be dependent on the weather.
On the day of the proposal, everything came together just as we had planned. I positioned myself discreetly and waited for the perfect moment. When he finally got down on one knee, the surprise on her face said everything.
She said YES!
Don't Forget the Champagne
One of my favorite proposal-planning tips is to think about what happens immediately after the question is popped.
For this proposal, we arranged for the venue to have chilled champagne and flowers waiting for the newly engaged couple. Once the surprise was over, we had the chance to slow down, celebrate, and enjoy a few champagne toasts together.
It's a small detail, but it makes the transition from "Will she say yes?" to "We're engaged!" feel even more special.
Exploring Daniel Stowe for Engagement Photos
Once the champagne was finished and the excitement had settled in, I led the couple around Daniel Stowe Conservancy to some of my favorite spots for portraits.
This is one of the reasons I love photographing proposals. The moment of the proposal itself is incredibly important, but the story doesn't have to end when the ring goes on her finger.
The gardens, architecture, greenery, and natural light throughout Daniel Stowe gave us so many opportunities to create beautiful portraits of the two of them together. We captured a mixture of candid moments and more polished portraits, using both digital and professional film cameras to create a gallery that feels authentic, romantic, and timeless.
By the end of the session, they had more than photographs of the moment she said yes. They had a collection of images that told the story of the entire beginning of their engagement.
